Abstract

Chittagong being the major port of the country deals more than 92% of the trades where as Mongla Port handles a marginal share. With the growing economy, Chittagong Port is about to exhaust its capacity. Moreover it cannot accommodate large ship due to depth limitation. Hence for economic and regional context, Government decided to build a Deep Sea Port (DSP) at Sonadia and carried out feasibility study in 2006. But till today nothing mentionable progress could be achieved. This research found out that the government, troubled with Padma Bridge, could not manage funds for this mega project. Now, government is in dilemma over whom to pick from three countries – China, India and the US -- showing interest in building the DSP at Sonadia. In addition choosing right management and PPP model for investment is also a challenge.  On the other hand, building DSP by Myanmar is obscuring the prospect of Sonadia DSP as regional hub. Now, top level of the GOB should involve implementing the project faster so that missing train consequence like submarine cable does not repeated. Thus this paper has studied all the relevant pros and cons for early implementation of DSP applying mostly interview and content analysis method
